Mariposa, CA

About

Casto Oaks Fine Wine & Art is a small, family-run tasting room in downtown Mariposa, pairing estate wines with local art displayed throughout the space. Owner Chris pours the tastings herself, walking visitors through how the area's microclimate shapes each vintage, while her grandson tends the vineyard. Reviewers consistently call out a few standout pours — a blended red called Man's Best Blend, a Cabernet, and Jessie's Zin. It's a welcoming stop for a slow afternoon in town.

Wine Tastings & Art

The tasting room doubles as a small gallery, with artwork on display alongside the pours. Tastings are hosted by Chris, whom reviewers describe as knowledgeable and generous with her time — from casual walk-ins to private tastings booked for special occasions, including one held for a wedding party. Dogs are welcome, and outside food is fine to bring along.

Sharing about our experience at the Winemaker's Cottage. We arrived during the hottest part of the summer to find that the mini-split does not cool the whole space. The unit is on the far wall of the living room, the furthest from the bedrooms. The bedroom we wanted to sleep in did not get any airflow from the mini-split as it was "around the bend" from it - and the other bedroom, though in line with the unit wasn't much better due to being so far away. On a 100 degree day, the AC was set to 78 upon our arrival, the bedrooms were quite warm and did not cool down until very early the next morning, causing us a sleepless night. Additionally, if you want the bedrooms to even begin to cool off, you have to freeze yourself out in the living room beneath the unit. I recommend future guests look at booking for other seasons, and be forewarned about the summertime cooling challenges here.

We randomly stopped into Casto Oaks in Mariposa and it turned out to be the highlight of our day. Chris gave us a tasting and was very knowledgable, sharing a wealth of information about the wine and history of the vineyard and area. The wine was tasty and the people were fantastic! We bought a bottle to bring back to Hawaii and can't wait to stop in again and say hi to Chris.

Wine is fabulous, especially the 2017 blend “ Man’s Best Blend”! We were allowed to bring in our pups and our pizza to eat while drinking the wine. It’s a super fine stop to make in Mariposa, CA!

Not very hospitable or welcoming when we came in. For reference, I was in a party of 9 for a Bachelorette party and this was our first stop and we came in a little before 4pm. The lady at the counter (older lady with glasses) just seemed irritated when we walked in, threw one of our IDs at us and it fell on the floor, and made a big deal that the tasting is "very expensive." I understand making sure we all understood it's $20 per person, not altogether but the tone of her voice was condescending. We ended up leaving and going across the way to the Local Grape.
