Tenaya Lake is the largest lake in Yosemite's frontcountry, set among granite domes along Tioga Road (Highway 120) in the high country east of Yosemite Valley. Named for Chief Tenaya, an Ahwahnechee leader, it's one of the easiest lakes in the park to reach — pull into one of several parking areas right off the road and you're on the beach. Summers bring swimmers, paddlers, and picnickers, though the water stays cold year-round since it's fed by snowmelt at roughly 8,150 feet.
Swimming and Paddling
Swimming is popular on warm days, but know your limits — the lake is cold enough to shock even strong swimmers. Non-motorized watercraft (kayaks, canoes, paddleboards) are allowed; anyone on the water needs a personal flotation device on board, and children under 13 must wear one at all times.
Getting There and When
Tenaya Lake is only reachable when Tioga Road is open, typically from late May or early June until the first heavy snow closes it in October or November. Overnight parking along this stretch ends October 15 each year. Call the park's road and weather line at 209-372-0200 (press 1, then 1) for current conditions before you drive up.
Trails and Amenities
An easy, mostly flat loop trail — about 3.5 miles — circles the lake for those who want a longer look than the beach provides. Parking areas offer picnic tables, vault toilets, and trash/recycling bins; the east end has an accessible paved path and accessible toilet as well.
