Olmsted Point

Olmsted Point is the single best roadside view in Yosemite's high country — a granite overlook along Tioga Road where you get a completely different angle on Half Dome, seeing its rounded back and north face instead of the familiar Valley profile everyone knows. Below it, Tenaya Canyon drops away toward Tenaya Lake, and Clouds Rest rises to the south. It's a short stop, not a hike, which makes it one of the most rewarding five-minute pullouts in the park.

What You're Looking At

The viewpoint sits at roughly 8,400 feet and is named for Frederick Law Olmsted, the landscape architect who helped push for Yosemite's early protection in the 1860s. The granite slabs around the parking area are scattered with glacial erratics — boulders dropped by receding ice-age glaciers — and a short path leads through a stand of trees to a small dome with the clearest sightline to Half Dome and Clouds Rest.

The Short Walk

• Distance: the Olmsted Point Nature Trail is about 0.4 miles round trip
• Elevation gain: roughly 42 feet — essentially flat
• Surface: bare, polished granite slabs with no railings at the drop-offs, so watch kids closely

Getting There

Olmsted Point sits on Tioga Road, about 40 miles from Yosemite Valley and 18 miles from the Tioga Pass entrance station on the park's east side, just a few minutes from Tenaya Lake. Tioga Road is Yosemite's high-elevation route and closes for winter — it's typically plowed open by late spring and shuts again once serious snow moves in come fall, so check the park's current road-status page before planning a trip outside summer.
