Valley View

Valley View, better known to regulars as Gates of the Valley, is a roadside pullout at the west end of Yosemite Valley on Northside Drive. Pull into the small lot right along the Merced River and you're standing at one of the valley's most photographed vantage points: El Capitan rising on one side, Bridalveil Fall dropping on the other, with Cathedral Rocks and Sentinel Rock filling the frame behind. No hiking required — this is a drive-up viewpoint, reachable by vehicle year-round.

What Makes It Worth the Stop

The draw is the composition itself: the river runs calm enough here, especially in early morning or evening light, to throw back a near-mirror reflection of the cliffs above. Spring is peak season for this shot, when snowmelt fills the Merced and green frames the granite on both banks.

Getting There and What's On Site

• Access: By car year-round via Northside Drive, near the west end of the valley.
• Parking: A small lot with limited space — it fills quickly at sunrise and sunset, particularly in spring and fall.
• Facilities: Vault toilets and wheelchair-accessible parking are available across the road, along with interpretive displays and a viewing area.

Respect the River

The Merced River here looks placid but the park service is direct about it: swift, cold water near Yosemite's rivers and falls has a real history of drowning incidents, and this spot is no exception. Stay out of the water, especially during spring snowmelt when the current is strongest. In January 1997, floodwaters here reached six feet deep in the parking lot — a reminder that this stretch of the Merced isn't always the calm mirror you see in photographs.
