October is the month locals point to when someone asks for the best time to visit Yosemite. Summer crowds have thinned, the air turns crisp, and the black oaks and dogwoods along the Valley floor start turning gold and red. It's the park at its most comfortable — warm enough to hike in a t-shirt by midday, cool enough to want a jacket at dawn.

The catch is timing: this is also the tail end of the season for the high country. Tioga Road and Glacier Point Road are usually still open through most of October, but an early storm can close them without much warning, so an itinerary built entirely around Tuolumne Meadows carries some real risk this late in the year.

Crowds rate as moderate for October — a real step down from the summer crush — and they keep thinning as the month goes on. Early October can still feel busy on weekends, while the back half tends to sit at the quieter end of the season's moderate-to-low range. Parking at the popular Valley trailheads is competitive early in the month but gets noticeably easier after the first couple of weeks.

Locals and repeat visitors treat October as the payoff month: the weather rating is as good as it gets anywhere on the calendar, paired with crowds that no longer require an early alarm to find parking at Yosemite Falls or Tunnel View.

This is prime hiking and photography weather — comfortable temperatures, clear light, and fall color make Valley-floor walks and longer trails equally rewarding. It's also the last realistic month to drive Tioga Road out to Tuolumne Meadows and Tenaya Lake before winter closure, so if the high country is on your list, put it early in the trip rather than saving it for the end.

If any part of your trip reaches the high country, pack a warmer layer than you'd bring for the Valley alone and check current road-closure status before you go — conditions up at Tioga Pass can shift faster than they do down at 4,000 feet.
